EH&S Services For the Lab Worker

Services
Description
Emergency Response EH&S can help you plan and prepare for emergencies. Visit the Fire & Life Safety home page for information on Building Safety Coordinators, Building Evacuation Planning and other emergency services. In your lab, know where your emergency equipment is located (eye-wash stations, emergency showers, fire extinguishers, fire alarm pull stations, etc.) are located.

Safety Procedures Know your responsibilities - read you workplace rules & regulations. EH&S can assist you in developing your laboratory chemical hygiene plan.

For Your Environment Know your laboratories features and the unique physical and chemical hazards that may be present.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Your work may require you to wear personal protective equipment (PPE). EH&S can evaluate your work area and advise you on the proper use of PPE.
Fume Hoods EH&S also provides inspection of ventilation systems and fume hoods. We can also assist in ventilation design and selection including chemical fume hoods, gas cabinets, and local exhaust systems for contaminant control.

Hazardous Materials You have a right to know what hazards exist and how to protect yourself.
Material Safety Data Sheets Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS's) help identify special hazards of chemicals in the workplace. EH&S can provide copies of MSDS (also available on-line).
Waste Disposal EH&S provides hazardous waste (chemical and radioactive) disposal services. Biological waste disposal is arranged using an outside contractor. Further information can be found on the safety programs home pages.

Training

Visit the Training page to view current EH&S course offerings. At a minimum, lab personnel must attend the Lab Worker Right-to-Know training. Depending upon your job activities, you may need other training as well. Check with your supervisor.

Lab Inspections Your lab should be inspected at least annually. EH&S performs laboratory audits of labs on campus. Contac EH&S for assistance in developing a audit program for your lab.
